Kids in the Kitchen

All Day
Location:
Martha O'Bryan Center
As part of the Junior League of Nashville’s (JLN) commitment to children’s health, the JLN will host its annual Kids in the Kitchen project on March 24, 2012 at the Martha O’Bryan Center. Kids in the Kitchen is an initiative launched by the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) in 2006 to help communities address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition.

Kids in the Kitchen
This year, the JLN’s hopes to attract a broader audience of children, fourth through sixth graders, including those at the James A. Cayce Homes, the city’s largest housing project.

At Kids in the Kitchen, community and JLN volunteers will demonstrate various food preparation techniques and assist the children in preparing healthy snacks and meals that are tasty and easy. In addition to lessons on healthy foods, activities include exercise demonstrations and other healthy living examples, such as understanding portion sizes, interpreting food labels and restaurant menus, and engaging in game shows like “Eat This or That.” Each attendee will receive take-home materials that include learning exercises for kids, tips on nutrition, recipes and other information on the childhood obesity problem.
