Statistics say that the chances of an under-privileged black male entering the mainstream -- after growing up in generational poverty in a tough neighborhood, dropping out of school to bring money home as a youth, and having trouble with the law -- are slim to none.

That’s what statistics say. But like many of the adults who come to Martha O’Bryan Center, Varry refused to be defined by statistics. A single parent raising three sons, Varry fought against the odds and held strong to his vision of becoming a productive member of society. And it was this belief in himself—and his vision--that led Varry to seek assistance from Martha O’Bryan Center’s Employment Career Services Program.

His strong work ethic, spirit of achievement, attitude of accountability, and aptitude for making his goals a reality had already resulted in Varry obtaining his GED and completing the Limited Residential Contractor License Course.

Having worked as a certified concrete finisher, Varry was highly skilled at applying mechanical principles to practical situations using machines, hand tools, and refined techniques to produce, build, or repair things. But he had one major problem -- he needed costly repairs on his truck to keep it running so he could maintain the type of employment he needed to make use of his skills and abilities.

At Martha O’Bryan Center, Varry found the career counseling and referrals he needed – including securing loans for his truck repair -- which supported his goals and personal sense of accountability. Today, Varry is the proud owner of Flathead Concrete, a contracting firm for light industrial work, painting and hauling. As a small business owner, Varry prioritizes “giving back,” regularly calling Martha O’Bryan Center to employ others enrolled in the Center’s programs to help support them and their goals for greater self-sufficiency.
