THRIVE
Empowering our youth
MOBC's THRIVE program, is recognized for its success because of the breadth of our philosophy. We define productive adulthood for our youth not just as graduating from high school but as continuing to secondary education and careers.
We have learned that we must do more than provide a safe place for school age youth to go for after school activities and homework tutoring. We must also provide enhanced academic curriculum in the most fundamental academic areas. THRIVE includes an Education Co-ordinator to develop the age appropriate curricula in math and reading that are integrated into our daily programs to reflect our overall goal of our youth being able to compete in the world outside of public housing as students, workers, and productive citizens.
The balance of THRIVE is comprised of additional educational opportunities based on what we know kids growing up in public housing need:
Social skills - so that a kid from the projects is comfortable in the broader world and not afraid to go beyond their community.
Exposure to the broader world - learning experiences through trips to colleges, cultural sites and events that allow kids to learn, grow and explore their own talents and interests.
Community service - because all kids need to know they have gifts and the ability to give.
Consistent love, support and encouragement -- every kid needs adults from whom they can draw strength and count on to be in their corner
Summer Camp
Each summer, THRIVE holds an intensive summer camp for childen ages 7-18. Summer camp continues the support we provide throughout the academic year by helping students stay focused and moving forward. Click here to learn more about 2008 summer camp at Martha O'Bryan Center.
