  • A trip to the Top Floor @ Stratford

Former Governor Phil Bredesen visited Stratford High School today and his trip included a stop at the Top Floor, the Martha O'Bryan Center's out-of-school time site at Stratford.  Bredesen was at Stratford as a camera team and CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien toured a science classroom for a story about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs.  The Top Floor opened in November to provide academic enrichment opportunities for students in one of Metro's lower-performing schools. Through partnerships with Metro Nashville Public Schools and the Oasis Center, students can come to the Top Floor for tutoring, drop-in homework help, ACT prep, college application and financial aid assistance and other post-high school transition services.  ...

  • Going hungry: An examination of Nashville's food deserts

Journalist Charles Maldonado explores Nashville's food deserts, including lower East Nashville around Cayce Place. Among those he interviewed was Miriam Leibowitz, the program coordinator at Re/Storing Nashville, the food desert awareness and reduction campaign of Community Food Advocates, a 1-year-old nonprofit working to improve the quality and sustainability of Nashville’s food system. "This was certainly not a new idea. There have been campaigns to bring and retain supermarkets into Nashville’s food desert neighborhoods for 30 years, since urban renewal came in and grocery stores left North Nashville and East Nashville and Edgehill,” she says. “So we have been working with ...

  • A few perspectives on education in Tennessee

Education is one of our pillars of service at the Martha O'Bryan Center. The Tennessean commented on results of Tennessee's 2010 standardized tests, which were released on Friday. The results are considered the public schools "report card," and the Tennessean congratulated the state for its success. At the same time, it  added: "The race to educational attainment is really just beginning, and it’s important that educators, elected officials, parents and students take this report card as a call to keep moving forward." In addition to its own editorial, the Tennessean offered perspectives from Karl Dean, Metro Nashville and Davidson County's ...

  • 'There is a light from heaven shining down'

In most places, Christmas is green and gold and ruby red. In Cayce, brown is the color of winter. Buildings, grass and leaves are brown and the community is dark at 5:00. The joy of the season is confined to the faces of the children and families who are our neighbors. I am always amazed by the gestures of love I receive from all my friends here in Cayce Homes. For the first time, we ran out of toys at our Toy Store and one of the last shoppers, who really didn't receive much for her family, came up to ...
