Youth participating in the Martha O'Bryan Center's Thrive academic enrichment program have been working hard on a special performance showcase for Black History Month.    The free performance, called "Yes We Can … Yes We Will" will feature singing, poetry and African drum/dance.    The showcase will last from 6-7 p.m. Monday, February 21. Meet the leadership team  East End Preparatory School, a new public charter school in East Nashville, opens in August for 88 kindergarten students in four classrooms. East End Prep, which is sponsored by the Martha O'Bryan Center, will add a grade each year until it is a K- 5 school. School Leader Jim Leckrone and Academic Dean Julia Halberstam explain the reasons behind the Martha O'Bryan Center's charter school. Former Governor Phil Bredesen visited Stratford High School today and his trip included a stop at the Top Floor, the Martha O'Bryan Center's out-of-school time site at Stratford.  Bredesen was at Stratford as a camera team and CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien toured a science classroom for a story about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs.  The Top Floor opened in November to provide academic enrichment opportunities for students in one of Metro's lower-performing schools. Through partnerships with Metro Nashville Public Schools and the Oasis Center, students can come to the Top Floor for tutoring, drop-in homework help, ACT prep, college application and financial aid assistance and other post-high school transition services.  ...

Ketch Secor, a member of the American roots music band Old Crow Medicine Show, brought his passion for music and teaching to youth in the THRIVE youth development program Monday at the Martha O'Bryan Center.  Secor, fresh from a four-date tour through three states, brought fiddles, a banjo, a box of harmonicas and a Jew's harp to show the students. Secor taught them about the history and importance of the instruments in American culture. Journalist Charles Maldonado explores Nashville's food deserts, including lower East Nashville around Cayce Place. Among those he interviewed was Miriam Leibowitz, the program coordinator at Re/Storing Nashville, the food desert awareness and reduction campaign of Community Food Advocates, a 1-year-old nonprofit working to improve the quality and sustainability of Nashville’s food system. Education is one of our pillars of service at the Martha O'Bryan Center. The Tennessean commented on results of Tennessee's 2010 standardized tests, which were released on Friday. The results are considered the public schools "report card," and the Tennessean congratulated the state for its success. Sandra Preston lost her job because she didn't have a high school diploma. She explored getting her GED through the Martha O'Bryan Center and took the practice test – and found that she was ready to take the actual GED test. Now she's enrolling in college and dreams of starting her own business. In most places, Christmas is green and gold and ruby red. In Cayce, brown is the color of winter. Buildings, grass and leaves are brown and the community is dark at 5:00.
